Zim Community in SA condemns brutal murder of woman in Alberton

The Zimbabwe Community in South Africa has strongly condemned the brutal murder of a 36-year-old Zimbabwean woman in the Emikhukhwini section of Alberton.

The woman, who was axed to death in front of her children while carrying her minor child on her back, lost her life in a tragic altercation over a canvas sail.

Ngqabutho Mabhena, Chairperson of the Zimbabwean Community in South Affrica, revealed that the suspect, a man known to the community, committed the murder after the woman attempted to reclaim the sail he had taken to cover his shack.

โ€œThis barbaric act underscores the ongoing vulnerability and systemic injustices faced by migrants in South Africa,โ€ said Mabhena.

He expressed concern over the lack of decisive action by law enforcement, noting that despite the community identifying the suspect, police have failed to conduct basic investigations, such as collecting fingerprints.

โ€œSuch inaction emboldens criminals and sends a disturbing message that crimes against migrants are treated as less significant. The right to life, enshrined in the South African Constitution, is universal and must be upheld for everyone,โ€ Mabhena stated.

He highlighted that this case is not an isolated incident, as many crimes against migrants go unaddressed, fostering a culture of impunity.

โ€œMigrants often endure violence, neglect, and indifference from the justice system. This dehumanisation not only perpetuates injustices but undermines efforts to combat crime effectively,โ€ he added.

Mabhena also criticised systemic failures in providing essential services, including healthcare, to migrants, further deepening their marginalisation. He pledged their commitment to pursuing justice in this case and holding institutions accountable.

โ€œThis tragedy calls for a reflection on our shared humanity. Migrants contribute to the growth and diversity of this society. Violence against anyone, regardless of nationality, violates the values of justice and dignity,โ€ Mabhena said.

He urged citizens and residents to unite against such atrocities and demand accountability from law enforcement and public institutions.

โ€œOur heartfelt condolences go to the family and children of the deceased. ZimCommunitySA reaffirms its dedication to seeking justice and advocating for the rights and dignity of all migrants in South Africa. Together, we can build a society where everyone is valued, protected, and treated with respect,โ€ Mabhena concluded.
