Deadly Deka Bridge accident declared a state of disaster

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the Deka Bridge road traffic accident in Hwange District a State of Disaster in terms of Section 27(1) of the Civil Protection Act [Chapter 10:06].

The declaration follows a tragic accident that occurred at Deka Bridge in Hwange District, Matabeleland North Province, on 23 May 2026, involving a Toyota Noah carrying pilgrims travelling from Makwa Roman Catholic Church to Hwange Town.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Minister of Local Government and Public Works Daniel Garwe said preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle plunged into the Deka River at approximately 0600 hours, resulting in the deaths of eight passengers on the spot, while six others sustained injuries.

“The injured are currently receiving treatment at Hwange Colliery Hospital, while the remains of the deceased were conveyed to the same institution pending identification and burial arrangements,” he said.

Garwe said the declaration of a State of Disaster enables the Government to mobilise and coordinate the necessary support and resources required to assist the affected families, facilitate funeral assistance for the deceased, and provide medical support to the injured survivors.

“Government emergency services, led by the Zimbabwe Republic Police and supported by Civil Protection structures, responded swiftly to the scene. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are underway,” he said.

He added that the Government extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wishes a speedy recovery to those receiving treatment.

“This tragic incident serves as a reminder to all road users to exercise caution and strictly observe road safety regulations at all times in order to safeguard lives,” said Garwe.

Meanwhile, Greater Hwange Residents Trust coordinator Fidelis Chima said the organisation has consistently advocated for local authorities to be empowered to tax vehicles for the purpose of maintaining roads within their jurisdictions.

“It is sad that eight people died, and we also received reports that the driver was detained for homicide. The Deka Bridge is extremely narrow and the road is in a poor state,” he said.

Chima added that most road networks in the region are in a dire condition.
