Three schoolchildren seriously injured after being hit by car in Bulawayo

Three schoolchildren were seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle driven by an 81-year-old woman in Bulawayo’s Hillside suburb on Monday afternoon, police have said.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Dundee Drive and Hamilton Road at around 3:30pm.

The three pupils, all aged 16, were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, said the elderly woman was driving a Honda CR-V northbound along Dundee Drive when the incident occurred.

“Police in Bulawayo confirm receiving a report of a serious road traffic accident which occurred at the intersection of Dundee Drive and Hamilton Road in Hillside, Bulawayo, where three schoolchildren were injured,” she said.

“Two of the victims are female learners from Emganwini, while the third is a male learner from Nketa 8 suburb. They were walking south along Dundee Drive after school when they were struck by the vehicle. They were taken to Mpilo Central Hospital for medical treatment.”

The accident occurred hours after another serious road traffic accident reported earlier that morning, in which 17 passengers and a driver were injured in a head-on collision involving a kombi along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.

Inspector Msebele urged motorists to remain vigilant at all times and to pay particular attention to children travelling to and from school.

“Police urge all motorists to exercise extreme caution and keep a proper lookout, especially for schoolchildren, in order to prevent road traffic accidents,” she said.
