ZAPU to host fundraising gala in support of social welfare programs

The opposition ZAPU party is planning to host a fundraising event this weekend to raise money to support its social welfare projects for youths and the elderly.

The revolutionary party has been struggling financially and last year managed to field a few candidates as it failed to pay the ‘hefty’ nomination fees that were required for contesting candidates in both the national and subsequent by-elections.

ZAPU is primarily funded through party member subscriptions and donations.

As part of the fundraising campaign, the party will this Saturday host a fundraising gala at Dingumuzi Stadium in Plumtree, Matabeleland South Province.

“On Saturday, 4 May, ZAPU will hold a fundraising activity for its disadvantaged members at Dingumuzi Stadium in Plumtree. The money raised will go towards the support of horticulture, clothing, sewing and chicken projects in Bulilima, Plumtree and neighbouring areas,” said the party’s Matabeleland South provincial Treasurer and Fundraising event coordinator, Sikhanyisile Moyo.

Moyo said proceeds from the fundraising will go towards boosting several livelihood projects that the party runs.

She also added that her party strongly believes in empowering citizens as opposed to doling out hand-outs like other political parties.

“Unlike other political parties which use taxpayers money to buy votes, ZAPU believes in carrying out real empowerment of citizens and educating them to use skills at their disposal. We believe this project will go a long way in eradicating poverty among our people,” Moyo said.

The party’s event coordinator said the party has lined up numerous entertainment activities as part of the fundraising event.

“Clement Magwaza will headline the event. There will also be entertainment for kids and a raffle. We have also organised a soccer match and there will be a variety of African food and drinks on offer,” Moyo said.

Moyo said the ZAPU national leadership will also attend the fundraising gala, which will be held under the theme: ‘Great things start small.’

“There will be  more such events coming up before the end of the year. The next one will hopefully be in Gwanda,” she summed.
