BCC braces for influx of people for ZITF, Independence celebrations

The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) says the city will have adequate water supplies when it hosts two major national events slated for this month.

Bulawayo is set to host the 42nd Independence Day celebrations and the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF).

This year’s Independence Day, which is annually held on the 18th of April will run under the theme Zim @42- Leaving no one and no place behind.

The 62nd edition of ZITF will be held from 26 to 30 April under the theme, Rethink, Reimagine, Reinvent value chains for economic development.

Speaking during the recent full council meeting held at the Council chambers, the deputy Mayor, Mlandu Ncube inquired about the measures put in place to ensure that the city has adequate water supplies since there will be an influx of visitors.

“We will be having visitors from other cities coming here for those official events, independence and the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, so I wanted to know what measures are in place so that when we have visitors, we don’t have water-shedding since we know people have different habits,” said Cllr Ncube.

He said there is, however, a need to educate those coming to the city about the habit of conserving water.

‘So, when we have visitors there is a need for us to have water. I think we need to go out and educate those that will be coming to the city that we have a habit of conserving water,” he said.

“We have other visitors who came here around January preparing for these events and they will be leaving around June, we should try to raise awareness on how we conserve our water.”

The chairperson of the future water and action committee Sikhululekile Moyo assured the councillors that there are plans to ensure the city has adequate water supplies.

“We will raise awareness to our visitors that we have water challenges but water is going to be available, thus why you have noticed that these days residents in different suburbs are not complaining of water-shedding,” said Cllr Moyo.

She said the committee will ensure that water is available in every suburb.
