Wheelchair gift helps teen to get herself to school
Sixteen-year-old Nomalungelo Mpofu’s dream of going back to school received a major boost after she was gifted with a wheelchair.
Mpofu had her leg amputated last year after she developed cancer.
Since 2011 Nomalungelo has been struggling to walk and her condition forced her to drop out of school in 2017 when she was doing her grade 5 at Majiji primary school.
After CITE published her appeal, three women from the Qoki Zindlovukazi organisation came to her rescue.
The family collected the wheelchair on Monday and Nomalungelo could not hide her excitement as she jokingly told her aunt to lift her for the last time.
“I used to rely on my family to move around. At times I would be pressed, needing to use the toilet and no one will be around to lift me up,” she said.
“I appreciate this wheelchair as it will help me move around and go anywhere I want.”
In addition, her aunt who had brought Nomalungelo in the company of two other relatives to collect her wheelchair, Olice Mpofu said the family is very grateful.
“We are very excited to receive the help of a wheelchair, since 2011 she was unable to walk. As a family we are very happy as she will be now able to go to school and be able to do other chores on her own,” said Olice.
