Police detectives in Gwanda have arrested three suspects linked to the brutal murder of a gold panner in the wee hours of Thursday.

Prince Mkhululi Moyo who resided in Phakama township was axed to death at a house in Senondo Township.

Police sources who spoke to CITE said an operation involving the canine unit managed to track down the suspects.

“Our investigations led us to a shebeen in Phakama and we interviewed some patrons there who told us that the deceased had engaged in an altercation with the suspects involving gold,” said the source.

The detectives then laid an ambush leading to the arrest of the three suspects.

Benard Sibanda, the informant, who is owner of the house where the incident took place told CITE earlier that he was woken around 3.30 am on Thursday by the deceased`s pleas to his assailants to spare his life.

“It was around 03.30hrs when I heard someone screaming for help and pleading for forgiveness from his killers. After hearing the screams, I immediately woke up but I could not go out to investigate as I was not sure of what was happening outside.

“While he was being assaulted, he cried out, Mbongeni please don’t kill me,” Sibanda narrated.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Chief Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the arrests adding that they could not immediately release the names of the suspects as that could jeopardise their investigations.
