Plumtree fire tender and ambulance out of service

Plumtree Town Council’s emergency response capacity has been affected by the breakdown of its fire tender and ambulance, raising concerns over its ability to respond to fires and medical emergencies.

In the latest edition of Tjedza Service Delivery Updates-the council’s periodic newsletter with service delivery updates-covering July to September 2026, the local authority said the two vehicles were out of service, while staff shortages and procurement delays were further affecting operations.

According to the update, the section recorded 30 fire calls, 60 drills and lectures, 20 hydrant inspections and eight awareness training sessions during the period under review.

“The section is currently grappling with manpower constraints and the breakdown of critical service vehicles. The LP4 fire tender is off the run, while the ambulance is also off the run, a situation that has affected the delivery of emergency services, particularly ambulance responses,” the council stated.

“Other challenges being experienced include procurement delays, late reporting of incidents by clients and false alarms, which strain the already limited resources.”

The council noted that despite the challenges, the section recorded notable progress during the quarter.

“Training and awareness remained a priority. The team conducted first aid training for stakeholders at Bakers Inn and Plumtree High School, empowering them with life-saving skills. Career guidance and counselling sessions were also held for learners at Phakamani High School to inspire interest in the fire and rescue profession,” the council said.

“To improve internal efficiency, regular drills and lectures were conducted for fire and ambulance staff. Fire prevention training was also carried out for various groups, while the training of trainee firefighters is still in progress and expected to boost the section’s capacity upon completion.

“To address the challenges, several measures have been taken. The section has engaged the Finance Department to assist with billing of debtors and is awaiting feedback. Quotations for the repair and acquisition of an ambulance have been sourced and the section is now awaiting funding.”

The council further highlighted that routine inspections had been conducted, with at least 17 shops found operating without fire-protection equipment.

“The names of the non-compliant shops will be submitted to the Security Section for further action, in line with council’s thrust under Operation Tjenesa to enforce compliance,” said the council.

The town council urged residents and the business community to cooperate with the Fire and Rescue team by reporting emergencies promptly, avoiding false alarms and ensuring that all premises are equipped with fire-protection equipment as required by law.
