Shack fire: Man up for murder

A 28-year-old man from Killarney squatter camp, Bulawayo, has been arrested in connection with the murder of his 35-year-old neighbour whom he accused of burning down a shack belonging to another resident.

The accused person has been identified as Moffat Sibanda while the now deceased is Ngqabutho Maganga.

“On 26 May 2022 during the night, the deceased was at his residential area when he was taken by the two accused persons to a nearby bushy area in Killarney squatter camp. They were accusing him of setting a fire which destroyed a shack belonging to another resident where property was destroyed,” said Bulawayo Police Spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube.

He said whilst in the bush, the accused persons assaulted the deceased using unknown objects all over the body and later returned him to his shack.

“On the 27th of May 2022, his neighbours discovered that he had several injuries all over the body and they summoned an ambulance which ferried him to United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH) where he was admitted and he later passed on the 4th of June 2022,” said Inspector Ncube.

He said on the 9th of June 2022, police received a tip-off that the accused was spotted at Killarney, “acting on the information from the members of the public police managed to arrest one of the accused persons. Accused two is still at large.”

The police spokesperson urged members of the public not to take the law into their own hands but solve their issues amicably so as to avoid unnecessary loss of life.

“Police is also appealing to those with information that may lead to the arrest of the other accused person to approach any nearest police station,” said Inspector Ncube.
