Govt donates funds to repair destroyed Lupane school

The Ministry of Local Government has donated ZWL$90 000 for the rehabilitation of Komba Primary school in Lupane which was destroyed by strong whirlwinds, CITE has established.

Komba Primary School was recently blown away by strong whirlwinds, with a grade one pupil losing his life during the incident.

The winds blew away roofs of classrooms and cottages following heavy rains that were experienced in the country.

Komba Primary school headmaster, Amos Gama confirmed having received the funds.

โ€œI can confirm to have received the funds, we are working towards rehabilitating the school, the school has received US$80 000 towards building classrooms,โ€ said Gama.

He added that the bereaved family received ZWL$10 000.

โ€œThe family of the deceased also received some funds from the Ministry towards the funeral arrangement,โ€ he said.

The school head added that at the moment learners are using a tent as a classroom.

โ€œCurrently learners are using the one tent that was donated as their classroom.

โ€œWe hope that renovation and building of classrooms will resume soon as we receive more building material,โ€ said Gama.

โ€œAt the moment I cannot establish how much other stakeholders have contributed,โ€ he said.

Matabeleland North Provincial Education Director, Jabulani Mpofu said he was away and could not give a comment.

โ€œI am away at the moment I cannot give specific figures but Government is expected to contribute towards the rehabilitation of the school,โ€ said Mpofu.

The school is appealing for donations in the form of building material, foodstuffs and stationery among other commodities.

Meanwhile, during the 2020 National Budget presentation, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Professor Mthuli Ncube said construction of additional classroom blocks, as well as rehabilitation of existing ones, especially in the most disadvantaged areas where some learners are currently using tobacco barns and other such infrastructure, would be financially supported.
