The country’s leading telecommunications and technology company, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, has announced that it will soon introduce new data packages to enhance its current SmartBiz offering, following valuable feedback from customers.

In a statement released on Friday, the company acknowledged concerns raised by subscribers over the implementation of the Fair Usage Policy (FUP) on its SmartBiz data plans, which have proved to be very popular among small businesses, churches, schools and home users.

“At Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, your connectivity experience is our top priority,” the company said in a notice to customers.

“We listen to your feedback, monitor market trends and embrace new technology to ensure our services meet your needs. Your voice matters to us, and we want you to know we are listening.”

The company noted that the new data offerings will provide more options, flexibility and value – ensuring that customers have the liberty to choose packages tailored to their personal, educational or business needs.

“Over the past month, some of you have shared your experiences with us about our SmartBiz packages. Our commitment has always been to provide fast and reliable digital connectivity that empowers individuals and businesses across Zimbabwe,” the statement continued.

The new upcoming packages are expected to enhance customer choice while preserving the integrity and sustainability of Econet’s network resources amid surging demand for mobile data and broadband services.

Industry data has shown a significant jump in data consumption across Zimbabwe in the recent past, with more users turning to digital platforms for remote work, e-learning, e-commerce, and content streaming.

For example, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) annual sector performance report for 2024 said mobile internet and data traffic consumption rose by 75.09%, to 299.77 petabytes (PBs) in the year, up from 171.21 PBs consumed in 2023. (A petabyte is one million gigabytes.)

The same report noted that over the past 10 years, data consumption has shopt up 176 fold, from a mere 1.7 PB in 2014, to 299.77 in 2024.

“We are introducing new, broader data packages that offer more choice – so that you can select the option that best suits your needs,” Econet said in the notice.

“These are designed to ensure a reliable and consistent digital experience for all customers, while supporting the long-term viability of network resources.”

Econet said the changes are part of its broader vision to ensure inclusive digital access for all Zimbabweans while maintaining service quality across its network, which remains the most extensive in the country.

“We believe these new packages are a positive step forward, giving you – our valued customers –  greater flexibility and ensuring a better experience for all. Thank you for your continued loyalty and patience as we build a stronger, more sustainable digital future together.”

  1. Could you improve rural net work coverage , especially in Chihota Matemai area. There is booster at Mahusekwa but it’s not serving its purpose .We need to link with the outside world via good network connection and be able to conduct business in the comfort of our rural homes, consider us, our contribution matters to the economy as well.remember “Pasina Varimi hapana hupenyu”

  2. In this whole article nothing was mentioned about affordability, obviously that is what majority of us are looking for because of the harsh economical crisis in Zimbabwe.. your $45 package seemed to be working well I don’t know why you would want to change it..

  3. Would be nice if u would revise your prices downwards especially for pensioners who are really struggling

  7. waiting for a new data package launch can feel like waiting for rain in a drought, especially when current prices feel like they’re draining my wallet faster than your internet drains a battery

  8. The scrapping of the $18 data package that had 300 cross network was a slap in the face. Can the cross network minutes be re-introduced as it is real value for money or else will ditch your services and to your rivals?

  9. Please revise your smartbiz prices, they are too high and not affordable. However econet network is the best in Zimbabwe than all other companies but the problem is also that it’s most expensive than other telecommunication companies.
Please may you reduce your smartbiz prices, now we’re focusing on to find telone or liquid lines for data because they are affordable and very reasonable on their packages.

  10. There is an option now on the Smart 4U but it’s just stating that top up for $4 but that one is not lasting even 5 days. Since 2 August I have topped up 3 times. It used to be $10 and there was no problem at all so tell me what am I topping up really and upto which date?

  11. The three dollar WhatsApp bundle doesn’t even last for a month, Econet needs to update their data packages for sure

  12. I truly appreciate Econet for this data Initiative. I’m very pleased with how you’re listening to our concerns as customers. I believe this will go a long way in easing the burden for many people, especially during these tough financial times. Thank you so much, we are grateful.
