Dry Christmas looms for Vic Falls residents

By Judith Sibanda

Some Victoria Falls residents will likely spend their festive season holidays with dry tapes after the local authority announced that next month it will be disconnecting water supplies for all defaulting ratepayers.

The local authority announced that from December 20, it will be disconnecting residents that have not settled their water bills.

“Residents and stakeholders are hereby notified that the Victoria Falls City Council will be embarking on water disconnection exercise to defaulting ratepayers from the 20th of December 2021 going forward,” the authority said.

“The exercise is aimed at recovering the debt for the local authority which has struggled to services due to low revenue streams and will target residents and organizations whose debts are more than 90 days old.”

Council, however, said it will be lenient to those who would come up with a payment plan.

“You are therefore encouraged to come forward and clear arrears, or make acceptable payment plans with the local authority for a smooth delivery of services.”

In 2014, the High Court barred municipalities from disconnecting water supplies for defaulting residents without seeking recourse in the courts.
