Chief Mabhikwa of Lupane dies

Chief Mabhikwa of Lupane district in Matabeleland North has died.

Matabeleland North Police Spokesperson, Glory Banda said the youthful chief who was driving an Isuzu Twin cab sideswiped with a haulage truck on the 195km peg along Bulawayo- Victoria Falls Road on Sunday evening.

โ€œThe accident occurred yesterday, 195 km peg along Victoria Falls-Bulawayo Road. It was a case of a sideswipe,โ€ said Inspector Banda.

โ€œThe other driver was driving a haulage truck while the chief was driving his Isuzu twin cab. After the sideswipe, the vehicle veered off the road to the left and it was only the chief who was injured but the driver of the truck escaped unhurt. The chief was referred to St Luke’s hospital,โ€ said Banda.

Inspector Banda cautioned motorists against speeding along the Victoria Falls highway as the road is in a bad state.

โ€œWe are encouraging motorists, especially those driving overnight to avoid speeding in areas between Hwange and Cross Dete where the road is just very curvy and there is hilly between cross Dete and Karmativi, so the terrain is not for speed,โ€ said Banda.

Born Nichodemus Vusumuzi Khumalo, he made history by becoming the youngest chief at the age of 19 in 2012.

He replaced his father Edwin Khumalo who had passed on in 2006.
