Bulawayo mourns cultural icon Babongile Sikhonjwa

Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has paid tribute to the life and legacy of popular entertainer and entrepreneur Babongile Sikhonjwa, who died on Sunday at United Bulawayo Hospitals.

He was 49.

In a statement, Town Clerk Christopher Dube said Sikhonjwa’s career as a comedian, radio host, master of ceremonies and music promoter had contributed to the positive branding of the city.

“His Worship Senator David Coltart, the Town Clerk, Heads of Council Departments and staff of the City of Bulawayo join the Sikhonjwa family, the creative sector, the media fraternity and the entire Bulawayo community in mourning the passing of Babongile Sikhonjwa,” Dube said.

He described Sikhonjwa as “a true son of Bulawayo” whose entrepreneurial ventures promoted both local and international talent, boosting the city’s cultural and economic profile.

Known for his charismatic personality, Sikhonjwa was affectionately nicknamed the “Ndebele Rock Star” by fans and colleagues.

“The City of Bulawayo wishes to extend its sincere condolences to the Sikhonjwa family, the Bulawayo community, and the country at large. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Dube said.
