Bulawayo accident death toll rises to three

The death toll from a road accident in Bulawayo, where a speeding driver struck 11 pedestrians on Sunday morning, has risen to three after a 13-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries.

The teenager was the son of a 43-year-old woman who died at the scene.

According to police, the 29-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle and ran over a group of pedestrians returning from an all-night prayer service, killing two and injuring nine others. A passenger in the car was also hurt, bringing the total number of injured to ten.

The crash happened early Sunday morning along Nketa Drive near Chicken Corner.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the third fatality on Wednesday.

Police say the driver veered off the road and ploughed into the group. One person died at the scene, while another was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution and called on pedestrians to remain vigilant when walking near roads.
