Former Zimbabwe Saints goalkeeper Adam Maseko has died at the age of 75 after suffering from hyperglycaemia, leaving behind a legacy that helped shape football in Bulawayo and Zimbabwe.
Maseko, who was widely regarded as one of Zimbabwe Saints’ finest goalkeepers, also represented the national team during his playing career. His death has been described as a significant loss to his family and the country’s football community.
Family spokesperson and Maseko’s sister, Forah Gumede, said he would be remembered for his dedication to the sport and the inspiration he provided to younger generations.
“My brother, Adam Maseko, died at the age of 75 after suffering from hyperglycemia. His contribution to football was immense and his passing is a great loss to our family and to the football community, especially the Zimbabwe Saints family.

“We will always remember him as a hardworking football legend who dedicated his life to the game. He is survived by his two daughters, Clarete Maseko Sibanda and Silingiwe Maseko, as well as six grandchildren,” said Gumede.
Born at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo on 11 April 1952, Maseko grew up in Mzilikazi, where his passion for football began.
He attended Mzilikazi Primary School, where he initially played as a striker before enrolling at Mzilikazi High School. It was there that he switched to goalkeeping, a move that defined the rest of his career.
Maseko first joined the Kwanongoma Boys Club before earning a place in Mashonaland United’s Under-18 team. He was later promoted to the senior side, where his performances established him as one of the country’s leading young goalkeepers.
One of the defining moments of his club career came in 1974 when he helped Mashonaland United, now Zimbabwe Saints, win the BAT Rosebowl Trophy.
His performances also earned him selection for the national team. According to his family, he was called up at the age of 17 and was part of the squad that played Australia in the 1970 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in 1969, becoming the only Black goalkeeper in the national team during that campaign.
Maseko will be remembered not only for his achievements on the field but also for the discipline, commitment and passion he brought to the game throughout his career.
