Nust students granted bail

Thirteen National University of Science and Technology (NUST) students who were arrested for leading demonstrations at the university`s main campus on Monday have been granted free bail. 

Bulawayo magistrate Ulekile Muleya-Ndlovu remanded the students to October 21.

Scores of fellow students from the Institution flocked Tredgold magistrate’s court in solidarity with their colleagues. 

The 13 students from various faculties are Jok Deng(25), Chuny Joseph(27), Zibusiso Ndlovu(21), Joseph Nyamayaro(22), Tinotenda Kwaramba(21), Daniel Mangiza(24), Tanaka Charamba(22), Peace Harare(23), Methembe Msipha(23), Makosa Munyaradzi(20), Bekezela Mguni(26), Mduduzi Ncube(22) and Takura Khutshwayo(23).

Jabulani Mhlanga of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) is representing the students. 

State representative Mufaro Mageza told the court that on September 23 the students connived and barricaded the gates of NUST.

He said they were singing and waving placards written: We want to learn, police lectures, learn and we have paid fees. 

Anti-riot police, Monday, swooped in on the students and arrested some of the students who are believed to have been leading the demonstration before whisking them away to the police station.

Although the campus had been surrounded by police details some of the students, waving placards and singing song denouncing the university`s management, continued with the protests.
