Two-month-old baby killed after scooter crashes into Karoi school classroom

A two-month-old baby girl was killed and eight learners injured after a scooter towing a trailer loaded with suspected gold ore reportedly crashed into an unfinished classroom block at a private school in Karoi, police have said.

The accident occurred at around 12:00pm on Thursday at a school in Village 8, Chikuti, Karoi.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said an unregistered DSM scooter experienced brake failure before reversing uncontrollably into the building where a teacher, learners and an infant were present.

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 29/05/26 at around 1200 hours at a private school at Village 8, Chikuti, Karoi,” police said.

According to the police, “an unregistered DSM scooter towing a trailer loaded with suspected gold ore reportedly reversed uncontrollably after experiencing brake failure before crashing into an unfinished classroom block where a teacher, learners and an infant were present.”

The force said the impact had tragic consequences.

Subsequently, a two-month-old baby girl died at the scene after being trapped beneath the scooter and falling debris,” the statement said.

Eight learners were injured in the incident and were admitted to Karoi District Hospital.

Police added that “two of the injured learners were later transferred to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital for further treatment.”

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are continuing.
