Young people in Makokoba are calling for urgent improvements to sanitation facilities, including toilets and water supply, at Thabiso Youth Centre.
Proud Nyatsanza, a local youth, said many had stopped visiting the centre due to ongoing water shortages.
“Ever since the taps ran dry at the centre, my friends and I have stopped playing football because of dehydration. We will only return once the taps are replaced,” he said.
Makokoba resident Llois Lunga warned that unsanitary conditions at the facility had turned it into a health hazard.
“Due to the lack of toilets, young people are now urinating everywhere, making the area filthy and increasing the risk of disease. It is no longer a safe place for our youths. It has been two years, and the City Council has failed to keep its promise of replacing the toilets and taps,” said Lunga.
A student from Methodist High added: “Proper toilets and taps are a basic human right.”
Ward councillor Thandiwe Moyo also urged the City Council to act, warning that the crisis was undermining efforts to combat drug abuse among young people.
“The Thabiso Centre is a key sporting hub where activities such as football, netball, and weightlifting help keep youths off the streets and away from drugs. How can that be achieved without proper toilets and water facilities?” she said.
