Sengezo Tshabangu who poses as the interim secretary general of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has gifted himself a seat in the Senate after his name appeared in a list of candidates nominated to fill proportional representation vacancies in the upper house.
Tshabangu is famed for recalling several elected representatives from Parliament and councils across the country after last year’s national elections, as well as engaging in multiple legal battles with former CCC leader Nelson Chamisa and the recalled officials.
In the latest development, the controversial politician seems to have appointed himself as a senate nominee since he claimed to have the powers of signing for candidates.
This development was confirmed in a notice issued by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) on Friday on the names of candidates nominated to fill proportional representation vacancies in the Senate.
According to the ZEC notice, Tshabangu is listed among former Nkulumane legislator Kucaca Phulu, former Ward 16 councillor Lilian Mlilo and former Ward 29 Collet Ndhlovu.
Phulu is one of Tshabangu’s lawyers.
Tshabangu has led several recalls on elected CCC MPs and councillors he claims were imposed as August 2023 election candidates by Chamisa, who in turn resigned from the main opposition last month claiming infiltration by the ruling Zanu PF party.
