Fifteen people died in 12 fatal road accidents while 132 people were injured during the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays, police have confirmed.
In a statement, the police noted that there was a decrease in the number of injuries from 163 last year to 132.
The number of fatal accidents increased from 4 in 2022 to 12 this year while the number of fatalities increased from 5 last year to 15 in 2023.
The number of injured people also increased from 29 in 2022 to 85 this year.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged motorists to adhere to road rules to curb the continued loss of life.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should be patient on the roads and avoid overtaking when it is not safe to do so. Motorists should also prioritise the servicing of vehicles to ensure they are fit and secure to carry passengers of goods on the roads. Drivers should not speed in situations which are not safe to do so,” said Nyathi.
