Three people killed by lightning

Three people, including a father and his daughter, died after being struck by lightning in two separate incidents that happened in Binga and Lupane, police have confirmed.

This comes as hearth rains have been pounding in most parts of the country.

In the first incident that happened on Friday, Tuuse Nyoni (29) of Gwatakwata area under Chief Siansali in Binga died after she was struck by lightning while in a kitchen hut which was burnt down as a result.

Her five-year-old son and a passer-by who had sought shelter at their homestead when it started raining escaped unhurt.

The Lupane incident happened on Sunday in Ndimimbili village under Chief Mabhikwa.

“Evans Moyo (22) and his three-year-old daughter were fatally struck by lightning while his wife Nomatter Moyo (23) survived the with serious burns,” said acting Matabeleland North police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Mahohoma.

On the fateful day, the trio were also in their kitchen hut when a bolt of lightning struck them.

The injured woman was rushed to St Luke’s Hospital in Lupane where her condition was said to be stable.

Police have urged members of the public to be vigilant and observe safety during lightning storms.

“Members of the public are reminded to avoid sheltering themselves under trees and in open buildings such as car garages, gazebo or under shades. 

“When indoors, people should not take shower or bath, wash dishes or do laundry during lightning storms.,” he said.
