Bulawayo Ward 8 Councillor, Edwin Ndlovu, Sunday donated 50 blankets to the elderly in the ward to protect them from the cold and provide relief during the winter season.
The event was held at the Roman Catholic Church in Thorngrove, a day after the councillor hosted a celebration party at Macdonald Hall following the March 26 by-elections.
The blankets were sourced by the Global Humanitarian Aid Trust, whose chairperson, Munyaradzi Charuka, said the organisation’s role was to assist the most vulnerable in communities.
“Cllr Ndlovu approached us as an organisation, asking for donations of blankets to help the elderly in this ward. As a humanitarian organisation, we felt obliged to come in and assist,” he said.
The councillor also expressed gratitude to the organisation for the timely donation and promised the elderly to continue assisting the vulnerable groups in the community.
“Vulnerable people face the cold more without warm clothing and blankets so it is our duty to assist, especially now when temperatures are dropping drastically,” Ndlovu said.
“This gesture is part of my election campaign promise that we shall work hand in hand with the Ward 8 community spearheading development here, improving service delivery and assisting members of the community.”
On behalf of Ward 8 Development Committee’s Secretary for Welfare, Patience Ndoro, said the committee was ready to assist the community.
“Cllr Ndlovu is the first councillor in the ward to slaughter a beast for the community to thank them for their votes and at the same time for assisting elderly people with blankets. It is surprising that Cllr Ndlovu, has been in the office for two months but it seems he has been in office for longer looking at the amount of work he does for the community,” she said.
