Police in Bulawayo on Tuesday intercepted a group of Congolese migrants who allegedly escaped from Tongogara refugee camp in Chipinge and were reportedly in transit to the Democratic Republic of Congo via Botswana.
Sources who spoke to CITE said the 104 foreign nationals who included children were being kept at a house in Hillside suburb.
After receiving a tip-off, the police swooped in on the house and took the foreign nationals to Hillside Police Station while suitable accommodation was being arranged for them.
“We confirm we have 104 foreign nationals that were found in Bulawayo believed to be from DRC. They are going through vetting by relevant government departments. They were coming from Tongogara refugee camp but police are yet to establish the purpose of their travelling since some of them had travelling documents. They are also going through Covid-19 tests,” said National Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed.
