Teenager kills rival with machete over mine shaft

A teenager from Gokwe North killed another miner, striking him on the head with a machete during a rivalry gang fight over a mine shaft in Kadoma.

Nation Devine Majoni, 19, is currently facing murder charges for  killing Artwell Siwetshe on February 25, 2024 at Kanyemba 9 mine in Battlefields, Kadoma while fighting for control of the mine.

The accused has since appeared at the Magistrates Court in Kadoma and was remanded in custody to March 27, 2024.

“On 25 February 2024 at the Kanyemba 9 mine in Battlefields, Kadoma, a dispute arose between two machete gangs, the Maziga gang, and the Mandebele gang. The dispute was centred on who had the right to enter the mine shaft through the breather,” said a statement released by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

The NPA said the disagreement between the Maziga and Mandebele gangs escalated into a violent clash involving machetes, axes and knives.

“During the course of the fight the accused person struck Artwell Siwetshe on the head with a machete, resulting in his death,” said the prosecuting authority.
