Residents of Ward 1 in Bulawayo’s Central Business District (CBD) have raised concerns over the increasing presence of sex workers between 8th and 9th Avenue and along Lobengula Street, claiming it threatens their security.
During the day, alleyways, streets, and pavements are mostly occupied by individuals earning an honest living. However, once the sun sets, the area transforms into a hub for open solicitation.
This situation has left CBD residents feeling increasingly unsafe, particularly at night.
Some residents have also expressed concerns about the impact on children. It is reported that sex workers often use explicit language and dress provocatively, which some believe negatively influences young people. Exposure to such behaviour, they fear, may lead children to adopt inappropriate language and normalise certain actions, potentially affecting their social development.
Speaking to CITE Youth Hub, a Ward 1 resident, who identified herself as MaMpofu, voiced her concerns:
“As a mother, it’s heartbreaking to see sex workers lingering around our residential area, exposing my children to a world they’re not ready for. It’s not just about morality; it’s about safeguarding their innocence and ensuring they grow up in a safe and healthy environment.”
She also added that some local lodges have become hubs for sex work, tarnishing the reputation of the community.
A college student who resides in a CBD flat shared similar fears, saying they feel unsafe going out after 6 p.m. as people often mistake them for sex workers. “This open solicitation must end,” they said.
Residents have also raised concerns about the young age of some sex workers, warning that this could contribute to a rise in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV in the community.
In response to these challenges, CBD residents are organising community meetings and forums to discuss their concerns and explore potential solutions to address the issue.
