Vic Falls mayor arrested on fraud charges
Victoria Falls mayor Councillor Somveli Dlamini has been arrested on allegations of fraud and concealing from a principal a personal interest in a transaction.
Dlamini was arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission Thursday afternoon and is in police custody waiting to appear in court, Friday.
Posting on its Twitter, ZACC said the mayor will appear Friday.
“ZACC has arrested the mayor of Victoria Falls, Somveli Dlamini for fraud charges and concealing from a principal a personal interest in a transaction. He will appear in court on 7 October 2022,” said ZACC.
Details of the charges had not been given Thursday evening.
Dlamini has been at the centre of controversy with Town Clerk Ronnie Dube who he had attempted to suspend on several occasions.
On Monday Dube was forced out of his office and locked outside, by members of the Hwange District Residents Association and a group of Zanu-PF war veterans who accused him of corruption.
They said he was not supposed to be in office as he had been suspended by Dlamini to pave way for investigations.
ZACC visited the city on Monday and stumbled upon the offences allegedly committed by Dlamini and arrested him.
