Byo lockdown: No restriction on movement outside curfew hours

POLICE in Bulawayo have reiterated that there is no restriction to the movement of people outside the dusk to dawn curfew period.

The government on Tuesday approved that the Covid-19 hotspots in the city be put under localised lockdown with security details being deployed to enforce the regulations which include a 6 pm to 6 am curfew.

Some residents had raised fears that movement in affected areas will be restricted a situation which would have hampered the ongoing Covid-19 vaccination campaign at health centres such as United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH), Mpilo Hospital, Ingutsheni Hospital, Emakhandeni clinic, Nkulumane clinic and Princess Margaret Rose Clinic.

However, Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube allayed fears that movement will be restricted.

“People are free to move to the vaccination centres. The movement of essential service we are referring to is during the curfew hours, during the day people are free to move and the exemption letters are not required,” said Inspector Ncube.

“People are free to move, do their shopping and by 3pm all shops and businesses will be closing.”

Inspector Ncube said they expect those who are not part of essential services to observe the curfew time.

“By 6 pm we expect everyone to be home and only those providing essential service when going for duty are then allowed to move for example when a nurse or a security guard is going for night duty around 9 pm they are exempted but those who are not essential services are not allowed to be roaming around after curfew hours. During the day people can move around, we didn’t say people should not travel,” he said.
