A nineteen-year-old man from Mpopoma has been arrested on suspicion of murder after he allegedly stabbed to death a 29-year-old man in a fight involving a woman.

The incident happened around 5 pm yesterday at Nketa/Mpopoma Park.

The deceased has been identified as Cosmas Ndlovu of Nkulumane while the suspect was identified as Panashe Chafungemoyo of Mpopoma.

“On the 10th of August 2022 at around 1730 hours, Cosmas Ndlovu, a male adult aged 29 who is an artisanal miner of Nkulumane, Bulawayo was coming from a beer drink at Congo bar, Mpopoma in the company of his friend, both were seemingly drunk. Upon entering Mpopoma park, they saw Panashe Chefungemoyo and his girlfriend seated in the park. Ndlovu then called Panashe’s girlfriend by name and she refused, Ndlovu and his friend grabbed her,” said Bulawayo acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele.

She said Panashe intervened but Ndlovu poured opaque beer on his face.

“This angered Panashe who withdrew an okapi knife and stabbed the now deceased once on the left side of the chest near the collar bone. He then fled from the scene, leaving his girlfriend behind who managed to escape to her residence.

Ndlovu and his friend walked for about 60 meters before he fell on the ground bleeding from the stabbed wound. At around 1800 hours the deceased’s friend made a police report. An ambulance was summoned and upon arrival, the crew confirmed that the now deceased was already dead,” said Assistant Inspector Msebele.

Panashe was later arrested.

Assistant Inspector Msebele urged public members to solve their disputes amicably and avoid violence, especially when they are under the influence of alcohol, to prevent unnecessary loss of life.

“Members of the public should also desist from moving around carrying dangerous weapons,” she said.
