Police arrest suspects in murder of CCC member

Police in Bulawayo have arrested four people in connection with the murder of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Langelihle Dube (Zonda) popularly known as Mr Tuesday, a fortnight ago.

Dube (52) who was an entrepreneur who ran a tuckshop and a car park was killed by machete-wielding robbers who broke into his house.

The suspects who have since been arrested are Maxwell Mpofu (alias tsano) of Old Lobengula, Brian Moyo (alias Smally) aged 22 of Lupane District in Majiji village, Lucky Sibanda (alias Makhekhe) aged 26 of Lobengula West and Kelvin Njabulo Dube aged 30, who is on remand for other cases, of Pumula South.

On the 8th of June 2022, the deceased and his wife were sleeping in their bedroom when they were awoken by sounds emanating from their kitchen.

“The now deceased went to check and he wrestled with the accused persons. The wife followed her husband and was pushed back to the bedroom. The suspects demanded money and she gave them US$20 telling them that it was the only money they had. The accused went on to search the house and took the now deceased’s Itel cell phone and the informant’s Huawei cell phone and went away,” said Police Spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube.

Dube’s wife then ran to the kitchen where she found her husband bleeding profusely from the thigh and head.

“The police attended the scene and found the now deceased in a pool of blood with a bandage which the ambulance crew had earlier applied. The body was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH).

Inspector Ncube said on the 24th of June 2022, detectives from CID homicide received information linking Mpofu to the murder.  

“Upon interview, Maxwell Mpofu implicated the others as his accomplices. He led the police to the recovery of the deceased’s Itel a56 cell phone and Dube’s wife positively identified the stolen phone,” he said.

“The detectives further received reliable information about the other three suspects who were in their different hideouts.”

Inspector Ncube said the arrests were made possible with assistance from the community.

“We urge members of the public to continue working with the police to flash and rid Bulawayo of the bad elements. the suspects are set to appear in court soon,” he said.
