Pipe burst leaves Byo suburbs dry

Some suburbs in Bulawayo will experience severe water shortages as the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) is battling to repair a leak on one of the city’s main water pipelines.

In a statement, Monday, acting Town Clerk Sikhangele Zhou said suburbs fed from Criterion and Magwegwe Reservoirs will experience water shortages beyond the planned 72-hour water shedding programme.

Suburbs fed by Criterion include Bellevue, Newton West, Monstrose, Southworld, Nketa 6, 7 and 9; Emganwini, Pumula South, Pumula North, Pumula East, Pelandaba West, Old Pelandaba, Iminyela and Khami.

The Magwegwe reservoir supplies water to Cowdray Park, Gwabalanda, Emakhandeni, Entumbane, Lobengula, Magwegwe, Mabuthweni, Matshobane, Njube, Luveve, and Mpopoma.

“This is due to ongoing works to repair a bad leak on the Criterion – Magwegwe Reservoir interlink near Hyde Park Cemetery along Siyephambili Drive in Pelandaba West. The works which started over the weekend have taken longer than anticipated to complete, hence the regrettable interruption of the shedding schedule,” said Zhou.

Zhou said the affected suburbs “will be supplemented with water bowsers and kiosks”.
