A 33-year-old woman from Nkulumane, Bulawayo, died on the spot Monday evening in an accident where a Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) driver lost control of a bus while trying to park and load passengers at Pick n Pay Hyper, hitting five passengers who were queuing to board public transport.
The deceased has been identified as Tendai Mupamhadzi.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube, confirmed the accident saying the bus developed a brake fault and it climbed over the kerb and hit five pedestrians.
“There was a bus which intended to park and load passengers at Pick n Pay Hyper. The driver lost control and it rammed onto the passengers who were on the queue. One woman aged 33 died on the spot and four others were seriously injured including the conductor who was issuing out the tickets,” said Inspector Ncube.
He said the deceased was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH) for post-mortem while those who were injured were taken to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment.
“As police, we are carrying out investigations to establish the cause of the accident. This was an unfortunate situation because people were queuing for the bus to go home and this bus because of whatever happened and it went over the kerb,” said Inspector Ncube.
