Midlands sees spike in cholera cases

Midlands Province has recorded the highest number of new cholera cases as of April 3, 2024, while Mashonaland Central and Masvingo provinces recorded one death each, according to the latest situational report from the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

The report noted that 132 new cases were recorded countrywide on Wednesday.

Midlands recorded 40 new cases followed by Harare with 28 cases, Mashonaland Central with 23, and 20 new cases in Mashonaland West.

Manicaland and Masvingo had 7 new cases each, Chitungwiza had 5, Mashonaland East had 2, while Bulawayo, Matabeleland North, and Matabeleland South all had no new cholera cases recorded.

“As of April 3, 2024, Zimbabwe has recorded 31,002 suspected cholera cases, 3,917 confirmed cases, and 30,242 recoveries. Cumulative deaths are 671, with 87 being culture confirmed, and 584 are suspected deaths. The Case Fatality Rate is 2.2%,” read the report.

“Harare has the highest number of cumulative cases at 9,565, followed by Manicaland at 6,350, Mashonaland Central has 4,022, and Masvingo has 3,320. Mashonaland West has 2,347, Chitungwiza has 2,170, Mashonaland East has 1,405, and Midlands has 1,007. The Matabeleland region has the lowest cases, with Matabeleland South at 476, Matabeleland North at 295, and Bulawayo only at 45.”
