Met dept predicts heavy rains

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has forecasted heavy rains throughout the country this week.

According to the Met Department, heavy rains are expected from Wednesday until Saturday.

“Rains are expected countrywide from Wednesday 13 until Saturday 16 February 2019, with heavy rains in some places,” the MSD said in a statement.

“Of note, however, on Thursday 14 and Friday 15, parts of Manicaland, Matabeleland South, Masvingo Provinces, as well as southern areas of Midlands Province, are forecast to receive heavier rains in excess of 50mm in 24 hours”.

The Department said these rains may result in heavy downpours damaging winds, lighting, hail and flash flooding.

It warned people to avoid crossing flooded rivers and swollen streams where the depth is unknown.

“Flash flooding may occur especially in low lying areas and river planes, where possible move from such areas. Try to avoid being caught outdoors or on the road during heavy storms, more so at night when flood endangers are more difficult to perceive,” said the MSD.
