MDC-T recalls Lupane Councillor

A Lupane councillor who has been recalled by the MDC-T has vowed to challenge his expulsion, arguing that he cannot be recalled by the opposition party since belongs to the Welshman Ncube-led MDC faction.

Cllr June Mpofu, of Matshiya Ward 15 under the Kusile Rural District Council was on Wednesday recalled from his position.

This follows the recalls of several councillors and members of parliament by the then MDC-T leader Thokozani Khuphe after she took over leadership of the opposition party.

Douglas Mwonzora has since assumed the presidency of the party.

In a letter dated January 25 addressed to Cllr Mpofu by Kusile RDC Chief Executive Officer Christopher Chuma noted that the former had been expelled from the party.

“The Minister of Local Government and Public Works has declared Matshiya Ward 15 of Kusile Rural District Council, this is upon receipt of communication from the Movement of Democratic Change (T) (MDCT) advising that Councillor June Mpofu of Matshiya Ward 15 Kusile Rural District Council has been expelled from the party,” read the letter.

However, Cllr Mpofu vowed to challenge his expulsion and noted that the allegations against him are unfounded and are coming from bitter people who were offended because he refused to ‘cross over’ to the Dr Khupe faction.

“I really don’t understand why these people are recalling me now. I understand that there is a letter which the CEO has been withholding since September for reasons I am yet to establish. I intend to write back to them and have several issues clarified,” said Cllr Mpofu.

“There is a candidate who lost the election who has been bothering me saying I should join their faction. I don’t intend to leave my party for any reason. This letter only came when I refused to yield to his request. I will meet up with my party leaders and we will discuss a way forward.”
