Matobo villagers seek support for irrigation project
Faced with challenges from erratic rainfall and dwindling agricultural yields, villagers in Ward 15, Matobo District, are appealing for assistance to establish an irrigation scheme they believe could transform their livelihoods.
The villagers are confident that with the right support, the irrigation scheme could not only boost food security but also serve as a catalyst for sustainable development in their community.
Speaking to CITE, Project Coordinator Phineas Ndlovu said they already have a borehole, which holds enough water to sustain the proposed irrigation project.
“We are resettled villagers in Boomerang, in a section known as Nil Desperandum farm. We are planning to establish an irrigation project, and currently, we have a borehole left by the previous landowner, a white farmer. We are under A1 farm, comprising about 31 homesteads, and we would like to start this irrigation project,” Ndlovu said.
“This borehole had a mono pump, but it was removed. Nevertheless, the borehole has a consistent water supply and has remained unused for far too long, despite the community’s ongoing struggles.”
Ndlovu added that the community hopes to utilise the irrigation system to grow crops year-round to sustain the villagers.
“We believe that starting this irrigation project could significantly improve our livelihoods. The irrigation system will span 1,040 meters in length and eight meters in width. We plan to grow crops year-round, including maize, vegetables, potatoes, and more. This initiative could benefit not only Ward 15 but also Ward 25, our entire district, and even our neighbours in Esigodini and surrounding mines,” Ndlovu explained.
To realize their vision, the community is appealing for assistance in acquiring solar panels, a submersible pump, pipes, a water tank, and fencing to protect the area from wild animals.
“We have a certified farmer working with us, along with a committee and our village headman,” said Ndlovu.
