Matabeleland North receives least grain in government distribution

Matabeleland North province has received the least amount of grain out of a total of 46 494.52 metric tonnes that has been distributed by the government under the Food Deficit Mitigation Strategy. 

According to statistics presented by Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Honourable July Moyo to the cabinet on Tuesday, Matabeleland North received a total of 2 827.50 metric tonnes as of June 22, 2024. 

The program is part of the government's relief program to assist citizens in fighting the effects of the El-Nino-induced drought, which negatively impacted the farming season harvests. 

Matabeleland South, second at the bottom, has since received 4 542.27 metric tonnes of grain thus far. 

Masvingo province has received the highest amount, 9 149.49 metric tonnes, followed by 6 926.81 metric tonnes. Closely behind is Manicaland province which has received 6 894.64 metric tonnes. 

Mashonaland West has received 5 719.83 metric tonnes, Mashonaland Central 5 524.25 metric tonnes, while Mashonaland East has received 4 935.55 metric tonnes. 

Min Moyo said the food distributed thus far is three months’ allocation for each beneficiary, and the distribution has been conducted since May this year. 

He said regarding the Zunde RaMambo/Isiphala Senkosi, a total of 2 588.29 metric tonnes had been collected to date across all provinces. 

The cabinet was further briefed that all provinces have mapped the urban population that is set to receive cash under the Urban Cash for Cereal programme and the disbursements will start soon.
