Man kills self over $35 debt

A man from Phakamani village in Heany allegedly committed suicide by drinking a poisonous substance following an altercation with his sister over thirty-five dollars.

Nqobizitha Moyo (36) is said to have consumed poisonous herbicide while watering the garden on Sunday.

The deceased did not leave behind a suicide note.

Narrating her ordeal, Moyo’s grief-stricken wife, Veronica Mbewe said she was shocked by the death of her husband as he was not showing any signs of stress.

“I am pained by his death and the way all this happened. He left me in bed to water the garden,” said Mbewe while covered in tears.

He came to the house a few minutes later and took his toothbrush and went outside, when he came back I asked him what was smelling and he told me he had no idea.

“I then went outside to sweep the yard and moments later I heard him screaming. When I went to the house he only said to me “ sokuyilahla” and I was shocked when he said to me take my phone it’s now yours.”

CITE caught up with the neighbors who were equally shocked by the incident.

“We tried to make him drink fresh milk and cooking oil but it was too late,” said one of the neighbours, Prince Lunga.

“ We then went to the garden where he was supposed to be working and we found a half-full 2 litre container of herbicide.”

Moyo’s sister whom he was looking after her house came an hour later and found her brother dead.

A neighbour who declined to be named said,  “Mayo ‘s sister showed us the conversation she had with her young brother in which they had a fight the previous day over the $35 she owed him.”

“He told her sister that the money she owes him would be used in his funeral. I suspect that the fight he had with his sister pushed him to commit suicide.”

Moyo’s body was taken to United Bulawayo hospital (UBH) for a postmortem.
