Lupane woman seeks $700 for surgery
Olithi Moyo, a 75-year-old woman from Lupane, is appealing for financial assistance to undergo leg surgery.
Moyo sustained an injury on May 5 while preparing for a church revival and has been admitted to Mpilo Hospital since then.
She requires US$700 for the surgery, which includes the insertion of a metal support.
In an interview, her daughter, Elizabeth Ngwenya, said her mother is currently admitted to Ward B1 at Mpilo Hospital.
“My mother broke her leg on May 5, 2024. She is currently admitted to Ward B1 at Mpilo Hospital. She is supposed to undergo a joint operation which they said will cost US$700. My mother lives in Lupane and she was preparing to go to church for a revival service. She tripped and fell, which is how she sustained the injury,” she said.
Ngwenya said she is appealing for financial assistance as she is unemployed and has no one to assist her mother in the current situation.
“Her scheduled days for the operation have also lapsed, so the doctor advised that there is a danger that some of her bones might become necrotic, and she may end up having an amputation as her operation is long overdue,” she said.
She added, “I have even approached Social Welfare, but they said they can’t assist because my mother is a senior citizen and she should be getting free treatment at the hospital. However, the hospital said there is a metal that has to be inserted and it is not available, hence the US$700 that is needed.”
