Lupane couple kills child, buries body in anthill

A couple from Lupane in Matabeleland North allegedly killed an 18-month old child and buried it in an anthill to conceal the offence.

After committing the offence, the young couple fled to Insuza where they posed as people looking for employment.

The two have been identified as a 22-year-old Survious Ncube from Mafa village and 20-year-old, Siphethangani Moyo from Matshakayila village.

CITE understands that Moyo had recently moved in with Ncube.

“The incident happened last week Thursday evening, Ncube hit the child with the intention to kill her. The minor sustained serious injuries and passed on the following evening,” Moketsi Nkomo, a son to the woman who took in the couple in Insuza, narrated the incident to CITE.

The couple then hatched a plan to secretly bury the child.

They buried her in an anthill, took a 50kg sack and filled it with sand and used it to cover the anthill.

“The two then ran away and came to Insuza looking for employment where Ncube once worked as a herd boy at one of the homesteads. They could not find any jobs there and approached my mother who offered them jobs at her homestead.”

On Sunday, Moyo went to the neighbouring homestead to have hair done and in the process she confided in Annastacia Ndlovu, who was plaiting her hair, about the incident.

Ndlovu later reported the issue to the police who reportedly arrested the couple. Contacted for a comment, Matabeleland North police spokesperson Chief Inspector Sphiwe Makonese said they have not yet received the report.

“We haven’t received the report, I will get in touch with the OIC Insuza,” said Inspector Makonese.
