Lukewarm response from CCC on Khupe’s endorsement

The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has remained mum on MDC-T leader Thokozani Khupe’s announcement that she was backing the party in the upcoming by-elections.

Khupe, clad in a CCC T-Shirt, convened a meeting in Mzilikazi suburb on Monday where she announced that she will be campaigning for CCC ahead of Saturday’s mini polls and for the 2023 elections.

Her announcement drew mixed reactions from citizens with some supporting her move while others warned that she could be a mole meant to weaken the newly formed political movement.

Reached for comment on Dr Khupe’s recent actions CCC national spokesperson, Fadzai Mahere, offered a lukewarm response.

“Right now, Agenda 2022 is about Citizens’ Action for Change. The core business of every citizen is to mobilize, organize, recruit and conscientize for change so that we build a new Zimbabwe. The citizens’ movement is for any citizen,” she told CITE in an interview.

Mahere, however, said the party’s leadership would be determined by citizens who are at the centre of the movement and all its decision-making processes.

“Citizens will assess each and every candidate for their suitability to lead,” said the CCC national spokesperson.

Responding to a question on Twitter, on whether the party had formed a coalition with Khupe, CCC president Nelson Chamisa responded, “Nothing to worry about. There will be clarity!”

In her press conference, Dr Khupe did not demand a position in CCC but rallied her party members for CCC candidates in the Saturday elections.

Critics said her statements were convenient, as she wanted a stake in CCC while other hopefuls said Dr Khupe did ‘right’ as the opposition parties must unite to defeat Zanu PF.
