It is false, drinking lemon and bicarbonate soda does not kill the Coronavirus

Claim: A message circulating on social media claimed that mixing and drinking lemon and bicarbonate of soda immediately kills the Coronavirus.

“Mix and drink as hot tea every afternoon the action of the lemon with hotter baking soda immediately kills the virus, completely eliminating it from the body. These two components alkalize the immune system, since when night falls the system becomes acidic and defenses lower,” read part of the claim

Verdict: False.

Contacted for a comment, The Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) Secretary-General, Dr Norman Matara said there is no evidence suggesting that yet.

“There is no evidence to say bicarbonate of soda kills the covid-19 virus, I think this a misconception, there is no evidence of that,” said Dr Matara.

Meanwhile, Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Constantino Chiwenga recently said there is a need for scientific research on traditional medicines.

“Someone asked me whether traditional medicines such as Mufandichimuka, moringa and Zumbani and other herbs can be used to treat Covid-19 or substitute drugs for Covid19. Some traditional doctors were said to claim that their patients recovered after administering herbs. My comment would be that you might be aware that some modern medicines are actually derived from traditional herbs.

“Yes, it is possible that some traditional medicines can be used to treat Covid-19 however there is a need for scientific research to be done to ascertain their efficacy,”
