The following is a list of ZPRA fighters who died during the liberation war compiled by Mafela Trust.

Each entry follows the format: real name (or a dash if unknown), followed by war name (in brackets, or a dash if unknown), and details of circumstances of death, burial site, home area, and next of kin (NOK).

FANJEYI: died between 1978-79 at Manyika Village, Tsholotsho, in a battle with Rhodesians. Buried by locals at Manyika Village. Operated in Tsholotsho 1978-79. Home details are not yet known.

FIGHTER: died in 1979 in Hurungwe district in a battle with Rhodesians. Buried in the area. Came from the Nanda area, Tsholotsho. 

FRANCE: died 1979 in Namande area, Mberengwa, when helicopters raided a gathering point. Buried in the area. Came from Plumtree District and operated in Namande area in 1979.

FRANK: died 1978 at Somk haya, Zhombe, in battle with Rhodesians. Battle took place near SDA Church where he died. Buried by locals at Somkhaya area. Home details not yet known. 

-FUYANE: died Sept 1977 at Entabeni area, Zhombe, in battle with Rhodesians. Buried by the locals at Entabeni where he operated in 1977. Home details are not yet known.

GERI: killed by Rhodesians in 1979 while crossing from Zambia for operations in Vic Falls. His body was not seen. Home details are not yet known.

– GLITER GERRY: died while crossing from Zambia in 1978 at Mandiya, crossing for operations in Vic Falls. His body sank in the Zambezi. Home details are not yet known. 

-GODFREY: died 1979 in Zvimba in battle with Rhodesians. Operated in Zvimba where he was buried. Home details not yet known. 

– GOROMONDZI: died 1979 at Marirazhombe, Mberengwa, in battle with the Rhodesian helicopters and ground forces. Operated in Beitbridge and Moerengwadistricts in 1979 with a unit of 13. Buried in the area. Home details are not yet known.

-GUDU TSHINA: died 1977 at Malandu West, Nkayi, in a battle with the Rhodesians. Buried by locals at Malandu West Ward, Nkayi. Home details are not yet known.

GUMEDE SICELO: died 1979 in Dadanda area, Lupane, in poison ing campaign against guerillas in NF 2 region. Buried in Dandanda.

GCEKENI NDUNA JACK died Aug 1967 at Inyantue, Hwange, in battle with Rhodesians. Was in the combined Unit of ZAPU and ANC forces which crossed into Zimbabwe in 1967 under the command of J. Dube. Home details are not yet known.

-GUMBA GUMBA: died 1967 at Loyantue, Hwange, in battle with enemy forces. Was in a combined unit of ZAPU and ANC forces which crossed from Zambia in 1967 under J Dube. Home details are not yet known.

-GUMEDE JULIAS: died July 1978 at Gwaai and Zambezi confluence in battle with RAR. Was in a unit of 24 deployed in Kamativi area. Body taken by the enemy. Home details are not yet known.

GWEBU: died 1978 at Jumbika area, Lupane, in a chemical warfare campaign in NF 2 region. Buried in the arca.

HAMADZASHE: died 1978 at Vuti East in Hurungwe in battle with the Rhodesians. Body taken by the enemy, Operated in Vuti East in 1978. Home details are not known yet.

HAPALALA: died 1978 at Mangutanyana, Tsholotsho, in battle with Rhodesians. Buried at Mangutanyana. Operated in Mangutanyana and Mqalweni in 1978. 

-HLOBO: died 1977 in Malan du West Ward, Nkayi, in battle with Rhodesians. Buried there by locals. 

-HLABANGANA MPITA: died 1978 at Sikobokobo Ward, Nkayi, in contact with Rhodesians. Buried by locals at Mdengule Village, Nkayi. Home details are not yet known.

HLATSHWAYO REGGIE (ANC): captured 1968 by Rhodesian forces during Sipolilo battles of 1968. Imprisoned in Khami where he died. Buried in Bulawayo Cemetery. Came from South Africa. Member of a joint Umkhonto we Sizwe and ZAPU unit operating in 1967-68 in Sipolilo. Involved in fierce battles of Zambezi Valley, Chiwore, Mangura and Sanyathi. 

– HLEKANI GANDI: died 1967 in Sipolilo in battle with Rhodesian forces. Was a section commander in a joint unit of ZAPU/ANC. Buried in the area. Came from South Africa (ANC). NOK not yet known.

INNOCENT: died 1979 at Nyakapupu area, Sipolilo, in battle with Rhodesians, Buried at Nyakapupu. Platoon commander under J.D. Boys’ detachment. Home details are not yet known.

-JAMELA: died 1978 in the Sengwangombé area, Nkayi, through chemical warfare. Buried in the area. Was a medical cadre in a striker detachment which operated in Nkayi. Home details are not known.

-JEAPY: died in Jimiia area of Tsholotsho in battle. Body taken by the enemy. Operated in the Tsholotsho district. Home details not yet. known.

JERRY: died 1978 at Vuti East, Hurungwe in battle. Body taken by the enemy. Home details are not yet known.

-JET: died 1976 in Hwange district in battle with Rhodesians. Body taken by the enemy. Operated in Hwange district in 1976. Home details are not yet known.

JIYANE TULA: died 1979 at Ratanyana, Kezi, in battle with 
Rhodesians. Body taken by the enemy. Operated in the Kezi district in 1979. Home details are not known.

JOBURG: died 1979 in Mudeme, Beitbridge, in battle with Rhodesian ground and air forces. Was section commander. Body taken by the enemy. Home details are not yet known.

JONE: died 1978 in Karoi district in battle. Buried in the area. Home details are not yet known. 

JORWE: died 1979 in Sipolilo in battle. Buried in the area. Home details not yet known. 

-JOSHUA: died 1978 in Sipoli lo in battle. Buried in the area. Home details are not yet known.

-JOSIAH: died 1978 at Manjanjathini, Zhombe, in battle with Rhodesians. Buried at Manjan- jathini area under Chief Mthiyabo Nyoni. Home details not yet known.

K

-KHOZA BEN: died Aug 1967 in Inyantue area, Hwange, during battle with the Rhodesian forces. Buried in the area. Was in a unit of ZAPU-ANC, which had crossed from Zambia in 1967. An ANC cadre from South Africa. 

– K.R, VASH: died 1978 in the Ndengwende area, Lupane, during a battle with Rhodesian forces along Gwampa Valley. Body taken by the enemy to Lupane Centre. 

-KHUMALO CHARLES: died 1978 in Lusulu area, Lupane. Wore poisoned clothes. Operated in Lupane district and was buried at Lusulu. 

– KENNY: died Oct 25, 1978 in Ntingwe, Zhombe, when his unit fought with Rhodesian forces. Killed with eight other guerrillas. Buried in a mass grave at Mungwe on Oct 26, 1978. Home details are not yet known.

KHULU: died Feb. 1978 at Jambezi B.H.6. Was given poisoned drink by locals, on advice of Rhodesian forces. Body taken by the enemy.

KHUMALO DAVIES: died 1979 at Mbondweni arca, Lupane, after wearing poisoned clothes supplied by enemy agents. Body taken by enemy. Came from Khumbula School, Pumula Mission, P.B. 5704 Tsholotsho.

-KOPOTSHA: died in Dandanda area, Lupane, of poisoning. Home details are not yet known. Buried in Dandanda.

  1. Good morning comrades. From what I heard, when people arrived in Zambia they were given psudo names but their details were captured, is it not logic to write all details of our fallen heroes or it’s because ZAPU documents were captured by the state that’s why you can’t do that?
