Bulawayo has the highest crime rate: Zimstat

Bulawayo has the highest crime rate in the country, according to the latest data by the Zimbabwe National Statistical Agency (Zimstat).

In its 2022 4th Quarter Crime Statistics report, Zimstat revealed that the country’s second-largest city recorded 3 134.5 criminal offences between October and December 2022.

This is against a national crime prevalence rate of 1 370.5.

Harare recorded 2 116.9 while Matabeleland South recorded 1 687.5 followed by Masvingo which had 1 359.2.

The Midlands recorded 1343.1 cases while Mashonaland West had 1 303.9, Matabeleland North 1214.1, Mashonaland Central 1 006,4, Mashonaland East 933.6 and Manicaland 546.3.

Presenting the report, Zimstat Director General Taguma Mahonde, said there was a 12 percent increase in recorded criminal cases from 185 660 cases in the third quarter to 208 027 cases in the fourth quarter.

Mahonde also revealed that 3 175 sexual violence cases were recorded in the last quarter of 2022, representing a crime rate of 20.9 per 100 000 people.

In the same period under review, the rate of assaults and threats stood at 180.5 per 100 000 people.

The data was sourced from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) crime report and syndicate system.
