Blood-stained rake, broom link Byo man to wife’s murder

A man from Bulawayo has been arrested for the suspected murder of his wife, after police investigations contradicted his initial claims that robbers had attacked her.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrest of 29-year-old Blessed Mpofu following the death of his 21-year-old wife, Shylet Siyabonga, at their home near Insukamini, close to the ZETDC sub-station.

Police said the victim was found inside the house with severe head injuries on Saturday, 5 April.

Mpofu had initially told police that his wife was assaulted by unknown robbers near Emganwini Shopping Centre while on her way home.

However, police investigations at the couple’s home uncovered a blood-stained rake and broom, allegedly used in the attack, linking Mpofu directly to the crime.

“The suspect is now in custody assisting police with investigations,” the police said in a statement.

The motive behind the killing remains unclear.
