Asakhe film festival will contribute to national healing efforts: NPRC

The National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) has commended the Centre for Innovation and Technology (CITE) for its inaugural healing and reconciliation film festival, Asakhe film festival, noting that such platforms foster healing and reconciliation in communities.

The film festival will run from 9 October to 30 October under the theme, In search of peace and justice.

Speaking during the official launch of the festival, Friday, NPRC Commissioner Leslie Ncube said the film festival will complement the commission`s efforts to foster peace building in the country.   

 “As the NPRC leading in the peace building process it is important to appreciate the role being played by CITE’s project which seeks to feature the significance of momentary equity in utilising film,” said Commissioner Ncube.

“Asakhe Film festival intends to highlight the importance of transitional justice using film and testimonies from some of the survivors. The aim is to contribute to national healing and reconciliation efforts in Zimbabwe”.

He added that the truth telling sessions being spearheaded by CITE are helping the communities in healing and preventing the recurrence of past abuses.

“The project focuses on truth telling, helps the victims in finding closure and also promotes reconciliation in communities,” said Commissioner Ncube.

He added that the project also helps identify necessary reforms that can prevent such violations from happening again.

“CITE’s use of alternative media platforms to promote dialogue on transitional justice in Zimbabwe with the focus on the past conflict that occurred in Zimbabwe is brilliant and a marvel to the media fraternity in Zimbabwe”.

Meanwhile, he said NPRC values working with stakeholders on healing, reconciliation and solving past conflicts.

“As the NPRC we value working together with stakeholders on healing, reconciliation, looking forward to solving past conflicts together. All of us should unite and share thoughts on how to deal with Citizens and transform the affected for the better,” he said.

“The 2020 theme for the national day for peace was shaping peace together, let us join hands as we share peace together in our beautiful nation of Zimbabwe, peace begins with me, peace begins with you and peace begins with all of us.”
