Woman, one-year-old girl killed by lightning in Plumtree

A 33-year-old woman and a one-year-old girl have been killed by lightning in Ntambama village, under Chief Manguba in Madlambuzi, Plumtree, Matabeleland South, while two other children were injured.

Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Stanford Mguni confirmed the incident, which occurred at about 2pm on Wednesday.

The injured children, two boys aged four and two, were taken to Huwana Clinic for treatment.

Mguni said the victims had visited a neighbouring homestead and were returning home when lightning struck, killing the woman and the toddler at the scene.

“They had visited their next homestead and upon returning to their homestead a lightning bolt struck and killed the two on the spot,” he said.

One of the injured boys sustained severe burns to his stomach, while the other fell to the ground but had no visible injuries, Mguni said.

He urged communities to take precautions during thunderstorms, including seeking shelter in a safe place.

“We also urge communities to quickly move to a convenient shelter or, if impossible, lie down when caught up in an open ground,” he said.
