Police seek help identifying 16 unclaimed bodies in Lupane

Police in Matabeleland North Province are appealing for public assistance to identify 16 unclaimed bodies that have been kept at St Luke’s Hospital mortuary in Lupane for several years.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the remains include four babies and were brought to the hospital on different dates without identifying documents or information that could help trace relatives.

“Zimbabwe Republic Police Matabeleland North Province is appealing to members of the public to help identify sixteen (16) dead bodies currently being held at St Luke’s Hospital in Lupane. The remains, which include those of four babies, have been in the mortuary for many years as they were brought in dead (BID) on different dates and without identifying particulars,” said Inspector Glory Banda, Matabeleland North Police Spokesperson

Authorities said the bodies have remained unclaimed because investigators have been unable to establish the identities of the deceased or locate their next of kin.

The appeal is part of an effort to trace relatives or anyone with information that could assist police in identifying the deceased and arranging their burial.

People with relevant information are being asked to contact the District Social Development Officer for Lupane, Mrs Chaparira, on 0773 242 691.

Police urged communities across the province to come forward with any information that may help resolve the long-standing cases and ensure the deceased receive what they described as a dignified burial.
