A 15-year-old runner from Nkayi is aiming for national selection as she prepares to compete at a key athletics championship later this month.
Siphilisiwe Moyo, a Form Three pupil at Sagonda Secondary School, has emerged as one of Matabeleland North’s promising middle-distance athletes, specialising in the 800 metres.
She recently finished second in the 800m at national competitions held at Prince Edward School in Harare, placing her among the country’s top junior runners.
Moyo is now preparing for the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) Interprovincial Championships, scheduled for 24 to 25 April at the University of Zimbabwe. The event is regarded as an important pathway for athletes seeking national selection and possible international representation.
Her athletics career began at school level, where she won multiple gold medals in house competitions across the 800m, 400m, 200m and 100m races. She later claimed silver medals in the 800m and 400m at inter-schools competitions in Zwelabo.
At Western Zone level, representing Nkayi district against athletes from the Southern, Northern and Central zones, she won gold in the 800m, silver in the 400m and bronze in the 100m.
Moyo went on to compete at district level in Bubi, where she secured gold in the 800m and bronze medals in both the 400m and medley relay. Her performances earned her a place in the Matabeleland North provincial team, which competed at national level in Harare, where she won silver in the 800m.
Her coach, Godknows Gatsheni, described her as disciplined and determined despite limited resources.
“This child is very committed and dedicated to her training. Even though conditions are not easy, she continues to push and achieve good results,” he said.
Gatsheni said her steady progression through school, district and provincial competitions reflected both talent and hard work. He added that additional financial support would help her compete without constraints.
“We are appealing for sponsorship to assist with transport, athletics kit and other essentials so that she can compete without limitations,” he said.
