Byo man charged with culpable homicide after fatal road accident

A 25-year-old man appeared in court on Thursday facing a charge of culpable homicide after allegedly striking and killing a pedestrian in a high-speed road accident in May.

Mbongeni Dube was granted US$100 bail by Magistrate Matthew Mutiro after pleading not guilty to causing the death of Sandra Mavhunga, who died after being hit by a vehicle he was allegedly driving recklessly.

The court heard that the incident occurred on May 25 along Luveve Road in Emakhandeni suburb, where Mavhunga was attempting to cross when Dube, reportedly speeding and failing to keep a proper lookout, struck her.

According to state prosecutor Constance Ncube, the accused did not stop at the scene and was apprehended by members of the public who witnessed the collision. The victim was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

“The accused failed to exercise due care and attention, and preliminary investigations indicate negligence on his part,” Ncube told the court.

As part of his bail conditions, Dube was ordered to reside at his stated address, report weekly to the police, and refrain from interfering with witnesses. He is due back in court on July 21.
